My god, do I ever owe [livejournal.com profile] lapillus, big time. See, when planning my weekend, I'd forgotten that today was Vividcon registration, and I'd arranged an outing with Mr. P. (brunch, and the Pet Expo)and rescheduling all that would have been somewhat awkward. (We have a sort of don't ask/don't tell arrangement in re: my fannish life.)

I figured I'd be home by two, and I *almost* decided to just get on line when I got home and register then--hey, it took five hours for the con to fill last year, right? I was sure I'd be fine--but being constitutionally anxious, I decided to ask Carol if she could register me at noon. And of course, as I'm sure anyone reading this knows by now, the con sold out in about an hour, and was long filled by the time I got home, but thanks to Carol's willingness to get up earlier than she would otherwise have to--on her day off!--I have my spot, and I am deeply, deeply grateful to her, because god, would I have felt like a ninny if I'd missed the cutoff.

The Pet Expo was huge fun, by the way. We spent some time watching the Ultimate Air Dogs event, which is a competition loosely based on the idea of "dogs jumping off the end of the dock into the lake," except instead of a lake there's a huge water tank and instead of a dock there's a raised platform, and the dogs compete to see who can jump the farthest (distance measurements are apparently made by judge's eyeball, which gives a pleasant informality to the whole thing). The dogs' handlers lead them onto the platform and throw a ball or buoy of some sort into the water, and the dogs are supposed to go running and jump in to retrieve it, and some of the more seasoned competitors actually did so. But there were also a number of first-time participants, who would run very authoritatively down the platform, reach the edge, SLAM on the brakes, and then run back and forth and bark and jump up and down and express in very clear body language "Dude, I want my ball back, but damned if I'm jumping into that freakin' tank," until finally their ball would be fished out and returned to them, and they would exit, to sympathetic applause.

There were also booths for many rescue groups, including no fewer than three for retired racing greyhound adoption organizations. As some of you may know, I'm seriously contemplating adopting a greyhound this summer, so I spent a lot of time going around petting the host-dogs in their booths and getting loved up.

In sum, YAY for Vividcon, [livejournal.com profile] lapillus, dogs, and weekend. BOO for winter, dirty laundry, winter, the impending approach of Monday, and winter.
