katallisonI tell you what, for sheer unadulterated Good Times, there's little to match having the heat in one's apartment go out at the start of what's being billed as the coldest week in 20 years hereabouts.
(Not that it ever actually gets COLD here in the Pacific NW -- I have not yet gotten soft enough to think the 20s above zero are COLD, nosiree -- except that in an apartment which is [a] not really "insulated" in any meaningful sense of the word, and also [b] currently unheated, it does get a bit -- chilly. Yeah.)
So, while Richard the Somewhat Competent Maintenance Guy fiddles with my heater (and with the dryer and stove, which have also stopped working in some sort of appliance sympathy strike) (which, yeah, I know, means the problem is in the wiring/electrical service, and hence will be longer and more complicated to fix, damn it), I thought I'd post that meme -- you know, the one that's been going around. 1. What are your nicknames?
Um -- well, “Kat” on line, of course, and in RL everyone knows me by a different nickname that I actually quite dislike. I've thought at times of changing it, but then felt like it would be awfully egocentric or something to ask everyone change their habits simply to accommodate my aversions, and so — anyway. Other than that, though, I don't think I've ever been nicknamed anything whatosever by anyone. I am nickname Teflon!
02. How do you style your hair?
God, I love my short-short hair so much. I wash it, I towel it, I spend about ten seconds randomly working styling glop through the strands so they stick out every which way. Then I go about my business, and eventually the hair dries into some weird bedhead-y configuration, and I am happy.
03. What's new in your life right now?
Well, bronchitis, but that's not *new*; rather, an honored December-holiday tradition Chez Kat. On the I-am-a-gizmo-whore front, just recently ...
... I bought myself ...
(… oh god, I’m so embarrassed …)
... an iPhone. Yes, yes I did. And I love it SO MUCH.

04. What colors are you wearing right now?
Let’s see, multiple layers (see "no heat in apartment" above), involving grey, grey, oh look, grey, aaaaaaaaand -- some grey and black plaid. (Gaudy, that last, I know.)
05. Are you an introvert or extrovert?
Lifelong intro, except for that part where I'm beginning to realize that interacting with (congenial) people really does make me feel better, deny though I may. (Actually, the last time I took an MBTI, I hit precisely at midpoint between E and I.)
06. What was the last book you read?
Well, what with being sick, I've mostly been flipping through piles of crap- or semi-crap mysteries. I've just gotten William Least Heat Moon's newest, though, and look forward to reading it.
07. Do you nap a lot?
Pretty much never. ( Except when ill.) Naps make me all disoriented and sweaty and befuddled.
08. Who are you crushing on right now?
My life is sadly crush-free these days. (Unless you count the iPhone.)
09. Is there anything that has made you unhappy these days?
Various of my friends who deserve much better are currently going through hard painful times, and I fear the coming year will bring more of the same for others. I feel like I’m perched on a little island of at least provisional security, while all around me people are being swept out into shark-infested waters.
10. What's your favorite dessert?
I'm really not much of a dessert person. That said, I do like the rice pudding that one gets in Indian restaurants.
11. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?
It’s 75 minutes from lurching out of bed to rushing out the door, but most of that time is spent swilling coffee and messing around on line.
12. What websites do you visit daily?
LJ, Seattle newspapers, Minneapolis newspapers, Metafilter and its various subsites, Metachat, NY Times, Lifehacker, Engadget, Brad deLong, Michael Berube, Paul Krugman, Making Light, Crooked Timber, I Can Has Cheezburger, JP Fitness Forums, Talking Points Memo, Chronicle of Higher Ed., 43 Folders, Bitch Ph.D., Unclutterer, The Big Picture, and various others as time permits and mood dictates.
13. Do you write fic? What was the last fic you wrote?
Um. I don’t know that I get to call myself a writer any longer—it’s been a long long time. The last story I posted was a thing for the dS Secret Santa back in -- 2006, I think it was? I *want* to write again, but things are currently not happening on that front.
14. Do you like to clean?
Oh, god, does anyone really LIKE to clean? I love things being clean. Not so much the getting them there.
15. What's the last song that got stuck in your head?
Sadly, it was Another Sunday/We Built This City, due to someone mentioning it and the related SGA vid in a post somewhere.
16. What's the last movie you saw?
I watched Iron Man recently when I was sick abed. As much as I like Robert Downey Jr., it did pretty much nothing for me. Nowadays I see movies about twice a year, if that, and never in theatres.
17. Bagpipe, didgeridoo, theramin -- awesome sounds or musical vivisection?
My first long-term partner played and taught Highland bagpipes, so my reaction to them (which could be summed up as "complex") has everything to do with personal history and essentially nothing to do with the actual instrument. Theramin is fun for about two minutes and then annoys. Didgeridoo I haven’t heard enough of to have an opinion.
18. What is your least favorite thing to do that you have to do everyday?
Flossing, probably.

I think I'm just going to wrap up in a blanket, and watch Slings and Arrows...
