I have this gnawing sense that NASA soaks up an unbelievable amount of money without much that I can see in the way of payoff. (I'm not talking monetary payoff, but, you know, expanding frontiers of knowledge, improving human life, etc. etc.)

The cynic in me says that the space program is a glorified Defense experiment and the science mumbo jumbo they spout is only to distract us from the fact that one day they'd like to blow shit up from spaceships instead of from airplanes.
