So -- after an unconscionably long hiatus of avoidance and dither, I finally opened up the AU-in-progress this morning, read through what I have, plus my 167K of notes, and .... arrghh. This thing is thematically more complex than End of the Road, involves more characters, and will probably end up being longer. I have no idea how I'm going to pull this off and cannot believe I'm doing this to myself. Again. Arrrrggghhhhh, I say.

(Lessee, if we estimate hypothetically 120,000 words total, of which I've got around 27,000 written already [most of it in dire need of editing], that leaves, um, 93,000 to go, and if we said I could maybe average a thousand words a day [which is ridiculous, but let's go with it], then .... )

Jesus wept. (*sighs deeply, applies shoulder to thirty-ton boulder, starts pushing*)

Heh. See, I was thinking about that too, and taking wan inspiration from the fact that there *are* apparently some people who undertake to write an entire novel in a month. I'm for sure not pledging to that pace or anything, but I do think I can at least move faster than a page a year. (*wince*)

Give yourself permission to write a less than perfect rough draft. One that wanders off topic and off point and goes down blind allies. Just let it run at full speed :)

This would be a new approach for me (I tend to edit rather intensively as I write, which slows down the parade a fair bit), but would probably be a good approach to try. And I also think what I need to do is get my laptop, take all games *off* of it, and spend an hour every evening somewhere that doesn't have wireless internet access. I could probably get a lot done that way. Geez, I could even combine it with a nightly trip to the gym! (OK, OK, let's not get crazy here....*g*)

The difference in mode (make it for one month, just as an experiment)is the primary reason I suggested it. if you get stuck, just go back to where the characters where still talking to you and try going forward again. Take your laptop to the Walker library and whenyour hour is up or you're hopeless stuck lift a few weights and get back in the swing of htings.

Um, not to be contrary or anything... but you don't, actually, *have* to do this to yourself.

You could restructure it to be shorter and simpler. You could throw away the grand scheme and turn it into a couple smaller stories. You could post it as a "ain't-never-going-to-be-completed" story fragment. You could even just toss it.

Fanfic is not mandatory, and life's too short to be spent flogging yourself through a project for which you have no enthusiasm.

Should you find some enthusiasm for it, though... I'll join the pom-pom club.

This is actually a *very* good thing to hear and to keep reminding myself of, because (a) you're right, and (b) I tend to go by contraries, and will procastinate unto death on anything I'm telling myself I MUST DO, whereas saying "OK, you totally have permission to NOT do this thing" often gives me a surge of energy for it.

The thing is, I really do want to write this--there's a lot of stuff I've already got down that I like way too much to toss, and the concept really works. I'm just lazy (*g*), and man, getting going again after time off is painful.
