Jul. 17th, 2006 05:56 pmLike everyone else in the North American continent, I have been suffering through the great July heatwave, which began with 100 degrees on Saturday (a day I spent entirely in the air-conditioned library) and worsened on Sunday, when we had torrential rains in the morning--the absolutely straight-down drenching variety that you find in the tropics--and then the day segued into heat and the kind of swimming, breathless, airless humidity that is *visible* hanging in the air, like ground fog. And then today ... well, no day that starts with 88 degrees and a dewpoint of 74 at 6 a.m. is likely to improve, but oddly a front of some sort came through and the humidity dropped like a rock, and even though it's 91 still here, it's bone-dry and actually not all that uncomfortable despite the complete lack of air conditioning chez Kat.
Right outside my front door is a big truck with a cherry-picker and a man in it replacing ... something ... not a bulb, but some kind of gizmo on the streetlight. This is the *third* time in the past month they've had a guy up in a cherry picker messing around with that streetlight, and I am quite impressed with the City's dedication to proper lighting of my neighborhood. Several of the guys from the block are standing around watching and making manly chitchat with the workers; the big truck's engine is idling; a few doors down someone is mowing the lawn; and I have Cops playing on the TV with the sound turned down to near-inaudible. (My recent addiction to Cops is a pathetic and almost wholly inexplicable thing, which I can only rationalize by telling myself I'm actually imagining how Ray and Fraser would handle the various suspects, victims, and bystanders. In fact, someone should some day write the story where the Cops TV crew follows R & F around for a few days, filming the inevitable wackiness.) (And yes, I know XF actually did this. I need to get my hands on a copy of that episode sometime.)
ETA: Of course, this being my neighborhood, I just looked again and discovered that the guys from the block are now standing/sitting around with their laptops, all jacked into Upstairs Guy's wireless connection and looking up -- god knows what, something that's as mysteriously unknown to me as the gizmo the streetlight guy was working on. Ah, summmertime, when laptop life moves out to the street ...
