Mar. 28th, 2003 07:38 amWell, we did not end up getting the six to ten inches of snow that had been forecast. I am just fine with that, needless to say, and will gladly deal with the inch of slush.
I finally got to see this week's Buffy episode last night (p'tooooeeeing once again in WFTC's general direction), and enjoyed it a great deal, not being particularly invested one way or the other in questions of canonical consistency as regards the nature of vampires, souls, etc. My only comment--not that I've read everyone else's reactions, but I'm surprised I haven't seen more people remarking on the
...that scene with Buffy and Giles in the graveyard, where she flat-out admits that her season-5 decision to try to save Dawn at the expense of the rest of the world was wrong--that she wouldn't do it that way again. OK, I have waited TWO YEARS to hear that from her. It has griped my ass that that issue has never really been dealt with in the show, and I still think this is too little/too late, but hey. I'll take it.
Spent some time this morning skimming through new war/politics threads on MetaFilter, a sure way to depress the crap out of myself. This link and thread were perhaps the most disquieting. To cheer myself up, I checked out the LJ of Kim Jong Il, which, OK, call me a goof but it made me laugh maniacally.
And then Mimi Smartypants is always good for the uplift, and for the wacky links--my favorite today was the

Date: 2003-03-28 06:54 am (UTC)I'm really sad to see it happening this way. Buffy's struggle always was 'how do I reconcile being a warrior under siege with having a life', where I think of having a life as defined as having love, respect, and pancakes in your life --you know, all the really big little things. At the moment, they're abandoning all that. It's all about 'the mission is more important than your life, your hopes and your self-esteem'. A sort of 'you're in the army now' attitude, where no one even cares that soldiers --or civilians for that matter-- are human beings too.
So while I also think it's nice to see them referring back to that, it had the same defeatist flavor to it that the season five thing itself had. And what I used to like about Buffy was that it used to be all about not giving into that sort of thinking.
