Jul. 4th, 2003 08:51 amAck--the reroofing of the duplex apparently begins today, and some poor SOB is up on the roof, at 8 a.m. on the Fourth of July, madly ripping off shingles. With what looks like a sizeable thunderstorm bearing down on us. I'm glad I don't live upstairs, I'll say that much; and I'm very, *very* glad I'm not a roofer, one of the few jobs that's even worse than hanging sheetrock, according to my buddy the construction worker.
My discovery of the week has been Oddpost, a really rockin' web-based e-mail service. I have long wanted to be able to just use webmail, on account of the hassles of downloading messages both at home and at work and then always finding the message I wanted was on the other hard drive; but all of the web mail interfaces I've tried out have been subpar in one respect or another. Oddpost does charge a fee ($30/year, of which they donate 10% to a good cause of your choice), but the service so far seems excellent, fast and rich-featured. I got it working with my external e-mail accounts without a hitch, but you can also use the oddpost.com addy you get when you sign up. They have begun integrating RSS feeds, so that you can subscribe to a variety of news sources or blogs and have them delivered to your in-box. The spam filters included with the service seem to be very good. The only downside I've discovered so far is that Oddpost isn't compatible with Mozilla--you have to use IE 5.0 or above--but I can cope with that.
Mostly, though, I really like the feel of the business; it seems to clearly reflect the personalities of its founders, a pair of wild and crazy guys (and also, from the Photo Odyssey on their site, damn cute)(link is somewhere in their FAQ). I am especially fond of their Subject-o-Matique service, which allows you to generate a random subject line for your outgoing mail (examples: "Pity the worms!" "Das Boot spoof set in subshop" "Amazing rum-soaked sparking nickel cigars!" "BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!" Even if you don't want to use the service, their website is great fun to nose around.
