random midsummer maunderings
Jul. 14th, 2003 09:40 pmThe middle of July is mid-mid-mid summer, and that is exactly where we are at this moment. Though the days have theoretically begun to shorten, at 9:40 p.m. the sky is still dimly luminous.
Also, it has been raining hard off and on all day, and now it is so very humid that in the quarter-light I can see the moisture hanging in the air, almost like fog, and everything is dripping. It's not raining at the moment, but it is still, thick, breathless, and wetly foreboding.
Also, the house is full of mosquitoes, because the back screen door won't close all the way, due to dampness, and thus it keeps out only the most lethargic and torpid of bugs. These mosquitoes, on the other hand, are a lively hungry lot. One of them bit me right on the lower lip sometime in my sleep last night, which is an amazingly annoying place to be bug-bitten.
As if that weren't enough to trouble my sleep, I woke up at 3 a.m. to a godawful racket outside my bedroom window, which turned out, on investigation, to be a pair of raccoons digging through the big pile of old shingles and rubbish that the roofing guys left in the back yard, right under my bedroom window, and still have not cleared away. I think they must have left some food wrappers in there, or something. Anyway, it's astonishing how loud a pair of raccoons can be at 3 a.m. when digging through a pile of old shingles. I was unable to scare them away for very long, or get back to sleep, and hence have been drowsy and wambly all day.
Four more days until vacation. I kept going today by reminding myself that this is the last Monday-at-work until late August. It's going to be a godawful week, but I can make it through four more days.
