Oh, it is happy happy technology-slut day here at the House o' Kat, and the sources of my joy are two in number:
1) Last week I broke down and ordered a refurb'd set of Sennheiser RS 110 cordless headphones from Amazon; they arrived today, are now connected into my computer, and are proving (as I had hoped) the perfect solution to a long-standing cycle of perplexity and vexation:
--Almost all the music-listening I do is via my computer, either stuff I've stored there or through Rhapsody's streaming service.
--However, my computer speakers suck.
--I could in theory connect my good stereo speakers to my computer.
--However, given my trepidation about inflicting my musical choices on neighbors (and knowing how crappy the sound insulation is in this building), I am loath to actually *play* anything through my stereo speakers.
--On the other hand, I don't want to be tethered to my computer with corded headphones while listening to music; I like to have it on while I wander around, clean, cook, read, putz, etc.
The Sennheisers are exactly what I needed; the sound quality is really damn good, to my inexpert ears, but what's really astonishing is the range. There is zero signal drop or interference if I roam anywhere in the house, if I go down to the basement and do laundry, even, and I just discovered I can wander out the back door, behind the garage, out to the alley, and it's only halfway down the block that I start to get static. Utterly amazing. I'd recommend these to anyone; Amazon's currently out of stock, but I think TigerDirect has them for 40-some dollars.
2) And then, about an hour after I got the headphones hooked up and working, there was a knock on my door, heralding the arrival of Jesse The Competent Time-Warner Guy, and . . . 30 minutes later, Lo! I have digital cable!! I have HBO and Showtime!! Dude, I have a DVR!!!!
And yes, there is some irony in the fact that I'm only caving on this front now that I'm really not watching all that much live TV anymore; what really tipped me over the edge into this particular outburst of consumerist frenzy was realizing that Slings and Arrows is showing on Sundance, and I had no way to access it. But you know what? Once cable-guy had left, and I fired 'er up and started racing through the HBO channels, almost the first thing I came across was -- Truly Madly Deeply! Right there, on my TV!
So -- I am clearly all set, and will never really need to leave my house again. Except for that pesky job thing, I guess. And, of course, and most wonderfully -- for Vividcon! To which I am departing in approximately 38 hours! (*reprise the GLEE! theme*)
