So you know, Wilma? That little hurricane with the funny name that had just barely gotten its chin above the Category 1 level a couple of days ago?

In twelve hours yesterday it turned into the most powerful Atlantic hurricane ever recorded, unofficial pressure record of 881 mb. (Katrina at its strongest dropped to only 902, I think.)

Once again, I'm glued to Jeff Masters's and Steve Gregory's blogs on Weather Underground. Florida people, big worried hugs going out to you -- take care, take care, take care.

Whoa. This I had not heard. In other news, last night I started reading The End of the Road, and even though I haven't made much of a dent yet, it is already superb -- and I am already girding my emotional loins¹. I know you're going to rip my still-beating heart out of my chest and force it through a fine mesh screen, and yet the writing compels me to go on. ::is brave little toaster:: Hee.

OMG. You know, this year the US is totally the battered wife to Mother Nature's brutality. I pray the people in Florida will have enough time and resources to prepare themselves for this one.

It takes very little upset to the balance of nature to throw the entire system into overload. That could be what we're seeing. Deforestation, changing watersheds, the impact of high-density pockets of 'civilization' generating incredible amounts of heat....

I'm watching the storm myself.
