And now, we've got a big storm front moving in; I can smell ozone and rain, and the light is that weird luminous yellow-green of impending deluge. Just what the rescue people at the scene need.

I just -- the impulse is to keep waving my hands around and saying You don't understand, I go over that bridge ALL THE TIME. I was driving over it Monday evening! it's only a mile from my house! This is in my neighborhood! How can this be happening?? So so weird, to have one's neighborhood bridge, the environs of one's daily life, on the national news.

So far the fatality reports are surprisingly low, so I'm trying to be hopeful. But I keep thinking of all the people I know at the U who commute over that bridge, whose schedules would very possibly have taken them there at that moment.

It's almost horrible to think that until this happened, we were almost begging for rain. I wish I could know before tomorrow morning whether any of my coworkers were involved.

It's surreal to see the coverage on the BBC's website, too.

This is in my neighborhood! How can this be happening??

*Totally* grok. I remember when the Murrah Building in OKC was bombed; I felt, very intensely, like someone had broken into my home. Gah.

And then the big tornado in 1999; it completely destroyed several neighborhoods that were part of my daily life. o.O

Currently waiting to hear from some friends who live in Minnetonka. They're probably fine, but I'm not going to be completely at ease until I hear from them.

Very happy that you're okay.

I thought of you and worried. I'm glad you're not out there; I'm hoping no one you know directly was there, either. (Would that there were no fatalities at all.)

Yeah, I'm hoping that none of the folks I know at work were staying atypically late. I'm very glad that I was over it an hour and a half before it went.

I know! It's so weird to be so far away from the city right now. My mind just can't wrap itself around what it's going to be like for the next days, weeks, months, YEARS until everything is back to "normal". Things like this just don't happen. And when they do, they don't happen in Minneapolis, dangit. I join you in the flailing.
