Today's happy discovery: The utter failure I've been having trying to connect my laptop's wireless to my upstairs neighbor's ostensibly open and unsecured access (again, with his permission) does not mean that my laptop is hosed in some mysterious way, because I stopped into Dunn Bros. Coffee this morning and it connected like a *champ* (clearly, since that is from whence I am now posting). I could, of course, have tried a manouevre like this TWO DAYS AGO and spared myself much 3 a.m. stressing, but oh well. Much, much relief that I do not have to try to get my computer worked on in the next 48 hours.

The weather here has been (by my standards) *wonderful* all weekend, which is to say, grey, cool, rainy and foggy. Oh, Minnesota, are you trying to win me back by showing that you CAN TOO be like Seattle? Heh. This is also a huge relief, because I was very afraid that I'd have 90+ degrees and suffocating humidity for this final push of packing and hauling.

One huge relief for which I am devoutly hoping, once I finally point the car west and start driving on Wednesday, is that the goddamned hamster-on-a-wheel brain I've been having lately (especially at 3 a.m.) will just SETTLE DOWN. The funny and yet pathetic thing is that all the stuff that hamster-brain is stressing about is stuff I have written down on the big list and have a plan to take care of. But apparently the ol' brain feels that some purpose is served by chewing it OVER AND OVER AND OVER anyway. And there's nothing like heading into the final days of organizing and packing on five hours of sleep. (*gnashing teeth*)

OK, break over, back to boxes. At least the sofa is now out of the house, so I have somewhere to stack them.

My pre-semester gerbil salutes your pre-move hamster.

Hurrah for healthy computer, and also for this blessed cool spell -- I am wearing a sweatshirt right now! Whee!

Ah yes - the nighttime marching band from hell. Been there, done that and THREW away the damn t-shirt. If you can find it, I recommend a homeopathic remedy called "Calms Forte." It helps with sleep and if you are careful with the dosage (take one for starters), you are not all groggy and wigged out the next day.

Moving and packing and relocating and all that is such a huge stressor, the hamsters can't help it. I hope they quiet down soon.

Q: Can it not find the wireless signal? Or is it finding it, but not letting you on.

If the latter, ask the neighbor if he's got his network MAC filtered. This means that, technically speaking, it is unlocked (not password encrypted), but has been set up so only certain machines are allowed on (Machine Access Control). If the latter, he's going to need a 9 digit or 14 digit (IIRC) number from off your laptop.

Good luck on both the packing and the hamster-wheel!
