If anyone wanted to see more pictures from my Oregon coast sojourn, I put them up on my Picasa web album (a web album service that I like a lot better than Flickr, FWIW).

I think the misty morning shots are my favorites. What lovely scenery -- and such fast tides. Fascinating.

Those are beautiful pics, and now I yearn for the Pacific coast. *yearns*

Oh, man, you make me nostalgic for Oregon. I need to get out there and have some quality ocean-and-mountain time. If I play my cards right, I might be able to swing that next year...

Thanks for posting the link! Beautiful pictures!

I love the wet sand pictures, in particular.

And if you get the chance, I'd love to know why you prefer Picasa to Flickr.

Well, actually, it's sort of an apples-and-oranges comparison; they serve rather different functions, at this point in their respective developments.

Flickr is actually, in my perception, a lot like LJ, except it uses photos rather than text entries as the primary means of initiating communication. But it looks to me that for a lot of its members it's at least *as* much a social networking forum as a photo-posting or -sharing one, with all the networking, community-building, cabal-developing, emotional-overloading, ego-whoring and kerfuffle-exploding that that seems to bring (I say this with love, of course). My main beef with Flickr is that the interface seems really clunky to me, and the navigation and various functionalities are really non-intuitive (again, like LJ).

Picasa, on the other hand, was originally developed (as I recall) as a piece of software for organizing photos and image files on one's hard drive, and it only really developed the web-posting functionalities after it was bought by Google. One thing I like about it is it does a really good job, IMO, of organizing photos, making it easy for me to find what I'm looking for and rearrange them in folders. It also has some limited but useful editing functions (cropping, highlight/shadow/fill light adjustment, some stuff like b&w or sepia conversion). Then once you've got stuff tweaked and sorted on your desktop, you can, in the same desktop application, create a new webfolder, click the photos or folders you want in that album, and do a one-click upload of the whole thing. You get a gig of free storage, and there's an upgrade option if you want more space (pretty cheaply, 10 GB for $20/yr) (of course since this is tied to one's Google account one could simply set up a new account and keep rolling). The default display size of photos is much larger than in Flickr, which is a plus in my book, though I like Flickr's slideslow format better.

Anyway -- just my very subjective thoughts on the matter.

I have such fond memories of Nehalem Bay. And it looks like you were there at a great time, too. :)

Damn. Just up on the coast this summer, already having to stop myself from packing and just fucking moving there.

(Why do I get the idea you aren't going to talk me out of this?)

You know what, there are perfectly nice-sounding 2 BR apartments in Tillamook for $450 a month. Dude. We could share a place, work part-time down at the diner or the Stop 'n' Shop, and *still* have enough moolah for Irish whisky and high-speed internet, and what else does a person need?
