Am currently undergoing prayer, fasting and meditation (I typed "medication" at first, which might be more apropos), in preparation for moving everything over to the new computer I bought last month. Some people, when applying retail therapy to life stress, buy shoes, or chocolate, or CDs; I apparently indulge in electronics. If one adds this to the current machine, the old POS desktop I still have lying around, and the laptops, I have ... um, way too many computers for one person. (*is embarrassed*)

(This is the new baby, and yeah, I know, eMachines, but I've seen a lot of tech press to the effect that their quality has greatly improved since they were acquired by Gateway. This particular model's gotten very good reviews; though it's pretty basic, I am enamored of the front-side built-in flash media reader, and you can't beat the price with a stick. Plus, DVD burner! Wheeeee!)

Anyway, I am staring at my C:\ drive in dismay. Good lord, it's appalling how much *stuff* has accumulated on here in the past three years. (sighing, rolling up sleeves)

Fancy!

I'm sure you'll manage. (: I have great faith in your ability to cope with things like this. Plus, housecleaning always feels virtuous, right?

I'm slogging through the slough of file transfers now (machine won't recognize my painstakingly burned backup CDs).

E-Machines have a great reputation for tech support. Two heavy user friends of mine sing their praises.

Good luck and godspeed. When I redid this computer, it took me *days* to get it the way I wanted it.

I empathize. I've just bought a Compaq RZ3430US to replace my beloved but ancient and literally-falling-apart Toshiba Satellite. The latter is still working (which I'm hoping will continue to be the case until the new one gets here, so I'm trying not to talk about replacements where it can hear me), but more and more and more slowly and dirtily and...yeah.

With any luck, I'll spend next week transferring stuff. And cleaning. And "packing". And throwing stuff out. When did switching computers get to look so much like moving across the country?

The boything and I have err, around 10 computers between us. Plus probably enough pieces to build most of another 2 or 3.

Perhaps I should have tried prayer, fasting, and meditation.... I got the new one a month ago and still have *both* of them hooked up (through the router), because I keep finding things I forgot to tranfer over.

Not to mention re-installing the applications, which took *forever.* Everything seems to be working now, but only after a lot of hair-tearing and wailing and cursing.

You'd think that getting a new computer would be fun and exciting, but really it's all stress! Maybe I should have called in a mashkiach...

Good luck. May be looking at same in future.
Three lockups this morning.
"Oh, just refresh your Windows installation again!"
Which makes it sound like a chemical to remove pet odors, instead of
"tear your hair out if you only have one hard drive installed."
Last time took me two months to recover from, and some stuff was lost 4ever.
I know, I know, it's all supposed to be backed up--I'd love to back up my bookmarks, for instance, don't know how and won't go wrestle Windows Help Files best 10 falls out of 3 million.
And I get annoyed at newbies in other fields who won't do their homework with the most basic web searches...

It looks like a gorgeous new system, Kat, and my sympathies: I just spent a weekend helping a friend reload WinME on her laptop (it doesn't have the specs to take XP; we checked) and then reload all her programs.... Whoof. She said much what you did -- 'Where'd I get all *this*?'

(Sending you scapekittens, via icon....)
