Thing that annoys me: When I yield to a student's pleas to meet with him on this, my last day before vacation, and set an extra-early appointment time for him, and have to get up extra-extra early because I also have to bake two quiches to bring to the staff potluck, and so before dawn I arise and race around all morning, chopping and baking and finally hauling ass + quiches in to the office, inadequately caffeinated and with messy hair and sweating --

--and the goddamned student doesn't show for the appointment.. GRRRRrrrrrr.

Plus, I can't remember if I turned the stove off before I left home. I kind of think I didn't. Oh hell and damnation.

Just remember I love you
And it'll be all right ...
Just remember I love you
More than I can say...

There. Now you've got a cheesy pop-song stuck in your head, too.

Re: the stove -- I've left the dog outside once or twice when I've gone out. The neighbors really hate that. He barks. Aaargh.

And? Mmmm. Quiche.

Thank you very freakin' much for that song, Deb; I had to blast it out by running a continuous mental loop of NIN's "Closer," and the battle between the two made the inside of my head an interesting place all yesterday afternoon, while I was trying to clean out my office.

Maybe he/she was there

and was merely invisible?

Spinach quiche?

And also, I'm sure you turned the oven off.

I did, I did! Yay me! I tend to have this chronic low-grade anxiety that I'm going to somehow burn the house down, someday.

There were actually two quiches, ham/tomato and red pepper/green chile. Both turned out delicious, though I didn't get much to eat because I had yet *another* student during the potluck. ::hand to brow:: Oh, the dedicatedness of me...

If you were really dedicated, you'd drop by and make me quiche!

It's a very quiche-y day. I picked up oodles of spinach at the store yesterday with plans of making one today.

Anyway: stupid, stupid student. I hope that your staff meeting went/is going well, that the stove is off, and that the trials of this morning give way to a splendid start to vacation.

Thank you! And may your quiche turn out deliciously. I've been thinking about you a lot lately, and aiming positive vibes in your direction. I really, really hope that life smooths the hell *out* for you, like, immediately.

Why thank you. You know I try to keep Jamaican bobsledder mind very much at the fore.

Oh, I hate that. I've finally gotten to where I won't make special appointments like that anymore. I had one student beg and plead and all but threaten to go to my boss to get me to schedule a conference on a Friday so she wouldn't get the absence for missing her Thursday conference. I replied that (a)she was asking me to walk to work, or take the bus, just to meet her on a day that I had no other reason to come to school on, and (b) given that she hadn't managed to make it to any of the ten hours I was at school Thursday (including the two hours during which her class was held), I didn't have a whole lot of confidence that she'd be there.

She dropped my course.

Yeah. ::sigh:: At least the staff meeting turned out less insanely boring than I'd feared. And hey, exciting news re: your Baby Timeline! You're a brave, brave woman, Lucy, and best of luck to you with it!

One of the (many) things that keeps down my occasionally-felt whim to go back to school is the fear that somehow the minute you register you become an inconsiderate psycho. What a rude little blighter!!

Enjoy your vacation, Kat! It'll all be over in a few hours.

I can't see you *ever* becoming an inconsiderate psycho, so no fear. And really, most of my kids are total sweethearts. (One of my fellow staffers gave us all a bit of a scolding yesterday for calling the students "kids"--her point, which has some validity, being that by calling them "men and women" we're setting an expectation that they'll behave like adults. But, y'know ... they're eighteen! They are kids, and I don't think anything I say or do is going to keep them from acting like kids, at least some of the time.)

True enough. I just hear so many horror stories! Frere (oft-mentioned in my blog) is going back to school and is sometimes awash in tales of the eighteen-year-old student behavior. And two of my other best buds are professors, so we get that side of the tale too.

(The real reason I don't do more than take the occasional continuing studies course, of course, is that I have no reason to.)

Isn't it wonderful to have a morning like that right before a vacation? It really helps you appreciate just how great a vacation is to have a nasty day right before it. I hope you have a lovely time.
