Sep. 21st, 2005 07:22 pmIn the middle of watching the updates on Rita, with fear and trepidation, I noticed it had gotten awfully dark out, and then all of a sudden the sirens went off, and yowza, tornadoes bearing down on the Twin Cities, along with the 75 mph straight-line winds and the big-ass hail.
Insert here obligatory philosophical reflection on how there is really no safe place anywhere. Me, I'm shutting down and going to watch the sky.

Date: 2005-09-22 01:16 pm (UTC)We used to live in Orlando, that's probably why. :)
We were VERY LUCKY with Hurricane Elvis. Our street never lost power (unlike the neighborhoods all around us, which were out for anywhere from four to ten days), and we had no structural damage.

IIRC, the pandas had just arrived, so keeping them happy (and cool, since it's 9000 fucking degrees here in July) was a big priority.

Date: 2005-09-22 01:38 am (UTC)As for Rita, though, I take some comfort in the fact that, last I looked, the Stormtrack prediction dot for 1 PM on Saturday was positioned right smack-dab on Bush's Crawford ranch.

Date: 2005-09-23 02:44 pm (UTC)The storms turned out not too bad, though some co-workers lost trees. Tornadoes in late September are pretty bizarre, but bizarre, flamboyant, melodramatic, and (usually) non-lethal weather is one compensation of living out here on God's own windswept tundra.
